Train travel with a baby: Top tips
When it comes to travelling with your little one, the thought and preparation may seem a little daunting, especially if you are a first-time parent. From ensuring their spare clothes, nappies, food and other essentials are packed, to making sure their favourite comforter is with you, it may seem like an endless checklist of things to remember.
Although you can’t entertain your baby with free games to play as a family at this stage, there are plenty of other things you can do to ensure you are prepared for every eventuality, and make your journey is as smooth as possible.
Here are our top tips when travelling with your bundle of joy…
Travel during an off-peak time
If you’re hoping for a quieter, more relaxing journey, we’d recommend choosing a time that’s not during rush hour or peak travelling times. These hours can be hot, busy and stressful and can add unnecessary pressure to your trip. You can book off-peak train tickets and discounted train tickets outside of these times – so you’ll not only be saving money, you’ll also be saving yourself a whole lot of stress!
Change your baby before you travel
Many UK train stations have dedicated changing facilities that can be used by both mum and dad, so it’s ideal for giving your baby a clean nappy just before you begin your adventure. By doing so you’ll minimise the time you’ll need to spend in the onboard toilet.
Be prepared with drinks and snacks
Not only for the baby but for you too. It’s important to keep your little one hydrated during their train ride – whether this is with formula milk, breast milk or water. It’s also important to keep them well nourished (as well as yourself), as you’re likely to have your hands too full to head to the buffet car! If you’re journey is long, pack some non-perishable foods like dehydrated fruit to keep you both happy and smiling.
Bring a toy or comforter that they associate with sleep
This will come in handy if your baby becomes restless at any point during the journey or if you’re travelling at a time that is usually their nap time. Whether this is a blanket, small pillow or their favourite teddy, bringing something with you that they associate with bedtime will help to sooth them into sweet dreams on the train.

By preparing early, getting your little ones changing bag packed (as well as your own) with all the essentials and booking your tickets at an off-peak time, it’s sure to be plain sailing on your next train adventure.
